" he was turned over to secret service and an investigation is underway. >> 11 news reporter kerry cavanaugh joins us with more on the crash involving michael phelps. >> hi, there. the accident happened around 9:00 last night and the scene brought much of mount vernonon to a stand still as you can imagine. two parked cars blocked traffic, but it wasn't the crash that had bystanders craning their necks. even though he wore a ravens jersey he stood a head taller than everyone else and was recognizable as michael phelps. police say phelps was driving a black escalade that collided

with a honda. >> there was a collision. two cars were driving and collided in the intersection. we'll find out if alcohol was a factor, we'll look at red lights. >> police say it does not appear as if alcohol was a factor. no one was hurt in the crash. according to investigators the driver of the hospital was -- honda was taken to the hospital as a precaution. coming up, you will hear from people who live in the neighborhood who were hoping this crash will bring long-standing safety concerns to light. kerry cavanaugh, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the baltimore ravens were sthaking off the -- ravens were shaking off the off-season rust at the same time. fans are weighing in. >> i want to have the same expectations i had last year,

seeing anything happening on h.d. doppler now. we're going to see high pressure building in here. it is going to be a basically dry weekend and seasonable weekend with highs in the mid 80's where they should be for the middle of august. 73 downtown. and where it is typically warmer because of the moderating influence of the atlantic ocean, 78 to begin the day. in the mountains of american maryland a high of 78 degrees and a better chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. in baltimore, i think we will be dry today, high 86, winds not a factor. really light and out of the northeast at five miles per hour. it looks like in ocean city the high today of 82 degrees. on the chesapeake bay east-northeasterly flow at 12 knots.

federal investigators are reviewing dramatic and startling footage over last week's midair collision over the hudson. an italian tourist testing his camera caught the sight-seeing helicopter as it collided with a small plane which appears to be climbing just before it strikes the chopper from behind. investigators are trying to determine how two experienced pilots could have crashed on a beautcally clear day. >> the key here is that whatever took place in the cockpit of that piper aircraft was enough to distract the pilot and not allow him to see the helicopter as he intercepted its flight path. >> nine people were killed in that crash. meanwhile, the controller in charge of the plane has been put on leave after it was discovered that he was breaking rules involving talking on the phone while the supervisor has been similarly disciplined for not being in the building at the time of the crash. >> a police chase comes to a dramatic and firey end in detroit.

it is all caught on tape. police were chasing this stolen pick-up truck when it was hit by a minivan. it then hit a power pole where it erupted into flames. the driver of the truck was killed. >> reports out of radical yi, north carolina -- rally, north carolina, said former presidential candidate edwards is expected to admit he is the father of a a woman's child. eds may come forward with the admission as early as today. >> in this morning's consumer alert. workers appear to be returning to their 401-k plans. after taking a beating, fidelity investments say more people increased their saferingse than decreased thefment according to

these dry conditions. on the bay winds east-northeast. water in the bay is actually in the low 80's right now. 99 is the record high. it was set back in 1965. august 14, 1961, the record low. no threat to either of those records today. 64 the average low. we'll be a little bit above that. it looks like we'll be in the mid to upper 60's. partly cloudy and still maintaining that dry trend. the sunsetting at 8:03. high pressure will dominate as the weekend pro progresses. it will start progressing, and there is a trough off shore. it is not close enough to impact our weather very significantly. only other variable, a little patchy fog. it looks like it is burning off, since the sun up and has been since 6:00 this morning. tropical depression not an issue. the national hurricane center is not issuing advisories. just a batch of weather.

quiet weather weekend for us. seasonable conditions in the mid to upper 80's. ripken world series starting this weekend. we have awesome baseball weather. slight chance for pop-up thunderstorms monday into tuesday. wednesday into thursday a better chance for scattered showers and storms. >> it should have been a simple traffic accident in mount vernonon. kerry cavanaugh joins us with more on the crash involving michael phelps. >> the accident happened around 9:00 last evening and while no one, including michael phelps and his passengers, were hurt. you see two crunched cars blocking traffic, but it was president the crash that had bystanding craning their nefpblgs even though he wore a ravens' jersey, you could recognize it was michael phelps. police say phelps was driving a
